About StormCrowd
StormCrowd is an innovative platform developed at the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism in partnership with Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. and the NOAA National Weather Service. This effort grew out of an AEJMC/Knight Bridge grant meant to encourage the use of open source platforms in journalism courses.
At its core, StormCrowd is built around Ushahidi – a crowdsource, geolocation software tool. Ushahidi, which is Swahili for “testimony,” was first developed to trace violence and peace efforts following the 2008 Kenyan election. Since then, it has been used in a number of natural disasters to get information to the public and first responders. StormCrowd brings the Ushahidi structure, optimized by WDT for this project, to weather reporting in central Oklahoma. Online, on your phone, and on your tablet, StormCrowd brings you crowdsourced information with news reporting from Gaylord students in real time using mapping technology.
We believe StormCrowd is the future of real-time information and geolocation reporting. If you want to know more about StormCrowd, contact us. If you are interested in bringing this type of technology into a journalism classroom or to your reporting email Julie Jones (juliejones@ou.edu) or John Schmeltzer (J.schmeltzer@ou.edu). If you are interested in bringing this type of tool to your newsroom or organization, contact Steve Gallien (sgallien@wdtinc.com). If you have questions about the platform itself, contact Kyle Davis (kdavis@wdtinc.com). You can find out more about Ushahidi at their website – www.ushahidi.com.
